Currently, there are a total of 112 villages in the north of the CCL including Daesongdong ‘freedom’ village, which is located just below the MDL and first established on August, 1953 based on the “Agreement About Civilian’s Entrance Into DMZ”. Daesongdong ‘freedom’ Village is the only village that exists inside the DMZ. Villagers of Daesongdong are mostly engaged in a farming business and they are exempt from federal taxes and mandatory military draft.
