In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, June 25, 1950, North Korea launched an all-out attack to communize the Korean peninsula. Although the South Korean army fought back courageously, they were unable to stop the North’s continued advance into the south.
The first action taken by the UN was the Security Council Resolution of June 25. This resolution called for North Korea to stop the invasion and withdraw its troops to the 38th Parallel. Together with the Security Council Resolution of June 27, the resolution provided a legal ground for military intervention by the United Nations.
The UNC’s mission was to enforce the Korean Armistice Agreement since the cease-fire. To better perform its mission, the UNC headquarter was established in Seoul on July 1, 1957.

The Military Armistice Commission (MAC)
| The Military Armistice Commission (MAC) was established to supervise the performance of the Korean Armistice Agreement and to discuss and resolve any violations of the agreement. |
| The MAC was created by the Korean Armistice Agreement signed July 27, 1953 and consisted of 5 representatives from each side. The UNC representatives were 1 US Army general, 2 South Korean officers, 2 British officers and 1 officer from other UN member state, while the communist representatives were 4 North Korean officers and 1 Chinese officer. It was located near Panmunjom. |
