Panmunjom
Panmunjom is located about 60 km northwest of Seoul along with ¡°United Nation Command Military Armistice Commission¡±(here after ¡°UNCMAC¡±) office. Originally, the area used to be called ¡°Neolmunlee¡±. However, the area was designated as a new location for armistice(cease-fire) talk in October, 1951 and the name of the area was written in Chinese as Panmunjom for the convenient of Chinese representatives. Ever since then, the name of area has stayed as Panmunjom.

Today¡¯s Panmunjom refers to a 400m by 800m rectangular shape of area reserved for talks between UN side of UNCMAC and Communist side of UNCMAC as well as its amicable and favorable progress since the October of 1953.

After the installation of JSA, it was possible for UNCMAC officials from both sides to come and go freely between North and South side of MDL, but only within area designated as JSA. However, mutual come and go between North and South was prohibited and MDL within the area of JSA was reconfirmed since the ¡®ax murder incidents¡¯ of 18th August, 1976.

According to its administrative district, its official address is Jo-San Lee, Kun-Nae District, Paju city, Kyoungki province.. However, the place has been under the jurisdiction of United Nation Command in accordance with Armistice(cease-fire) Agreement.

Starting with preparation contact for the South and North Korea Red Cross Talk in 1979, JSA has became a place to hold talks and conferences on a regular basis between North and South Korea ever since then.
